PILGRIMS WAY

VRBNIK – POD ČERENEC – POD MALI HLAM – ŽANAC

Path length: 8 km
Time of walking: 3 hours
Path of medium difficulty

From the centre of Vrbnik along Grohot Street (remains of the small church of St. Mavro - Sv. Mavar, which dates back to the 11th century, on the hill of the same name) you will reach the Pod Černec crossroads. According to the legend, the main Vrbnik area was initially located on the St. Mavro - Sv. Mavar hill where later the castle of Krk’s noblemen and the small church of St. Mavro - Sv. Mavar were situated. However, due to illness, the inhabitants moved to the existing, smaller settlement on the cliff. At the crossroads we continue straight on, climbing through the empire of rocks and wild aromatic plants, enjoying the beautiful view over the blue sea of the Vinodol Channel and the Velebit forest. Below Mali Hlam, the highest peak of our municipality, at the crossroads, you begin your descent towards the area known as Žanac (fresh water spring). Along the way you will find many water holes which serve to quench the thirst of the flocks of sheep. On the holiday dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, pilgrims walk along this path on their way to the votive church of church of St. Mary of Gorica – Majka Božja Gorička in Batomalj. If we turn right at Izvor Rike (spring of Rika), by following the signs we will reach Obzova (569 m), the highest peak on the island of Krk, or we can walk down the trail toward Punat.
