RISIKA

Risika is located 5 km from Vrbnik. There are about 150 permanent residents in this settlement, but the tame nature and proximity of the only sandy beach on the island of Krk in the bay of St Marek encouraged many to renovate the old stone houses, build apartments and holiday homes.

Risika comes alive during the summer, especially during the amateur swimming marathon that gathers a large number of competitors each year in July. In the centre of the village there is the parish church dedicated to St Jerome and the inhabitants of Risika throw a feast, Jerolimja, in his honour on 30th September each year. In the vicinity of the sandy beach there is evidence of the Roman presence and remains of the mediaeval Church of St Mark. On a hill halfway between Risika and Garica, near the area of Rovoznik and the springs of drinking water, one can visit the remains of the Gradec fortress from the 12th century, the ancestral home of the famous Counts of Krk, the Frankopans.
