Vrbnik is a small town that will happily reveal its 900-year-long story to any interested lover of history and heritage! Starting with the ancient Illyrians, the arrival of the Croats and the construction of Vrbnik castle, through Venetian and Frankopan rules, the period of the French and Austro-Hungarian administrations and ending with the turbulent 20th century. It is during the Frankopan rule that Vrbnik flourished as a Glagolitic centre and in the 19th century it once again made significant progress thanks to the esteemed intellectuals born and raised in Vrbnik. You will find traces of history everywhere you look. A walk through the labyrinth of Vrbnik's streets will take you back in time... You might discover an interesting legend and you will surely hear a lively conversation in the Vrbnik CHEkavian language and witness some of the Vrbnik’s old customs that are being practised to this today. No ceremony or feast can go without folk singing (kanet po domaću) and dancing (tanec) in colourful folk costumes to the music of traditional long flutes (sopeli).
